Turkana is our county, and we belong to the Lodwar Diocese. Our people with whom we work and serve are Turkanas, who are pastoralists, but we have many other people we meet in our workplaces from nearby countries living in the refugee camp due to various reasons, mostly because of wars and insecurities in their home countries.

From June to September we have been 7 in number: 5 sisters and 2 novices. We are involved in the St. Clare Training Center and St. Francis Teacher’s Training College, with Sr. Molly being the administrator, Sr. Brenda being the accountant, and Nov. Martha having her experiences in different activities and taking her classes in the food and beverage course. The sisters give themselves tirelessly as they help the young Turkana men and women and refugees to acquire skills for life and livelihood, as well as preparing quality teachers for our beloved motherland, Kenya.

The sisters also help the young generation on how to care for and protect Mother Earth by encouraging recycling, proper use of water, and planting as many trees as they can, plus using what we have without exploiting our surroundings. In many more various ways our institutions are a home where many young people are welcomed to learn new skills through many short courses that take place there through the help of different NGOs, especially GIZ. Our young sisters have also been equipped with new skills in solar installation, ICT and resource management, plus glass cutting.

St. Clare Training Institute has also taken part in the job fare where they advertised whatever takes place in the institution.

This year St. Francis Teacher Training College is doing their first online Kenya National Examination Council exams, and they are also offering an upgrading diploma course. Please come and advance in your education with us.Our second mission here is in Kakuma Mission Hospital, where we are represented by Sr. Hermine, who serves people in the reception-cum-cashier department, and Sr. Molly, who forms part of the board members’ team. The people and patients in this Turkana West area, as well as the refugee camps, are very poor and lacking basic necessities.

The hospital has been facing challenges over the years in serving the poor and the refugees with delayed payment of salaries. There is always a challenge for our sister Hermine to see how poor people struggle to pay their sick bills. She has a dilemma in seeing many people become sick, though it’s for them that the hospital functions.

The third mission in this beautiful place is in Good Shepherd Comprehensive School with Sr. Phionah and Sr. Christine, plus Novice Celestine representing us there as teachers and part of the administration team.

Sr. Christine is teaching in the preprimary section, and she is the class teacher of PP1, which is the most important class in the lives of children, as they learn to write, read, and discover the world of education. Nov. Celestine is also in the same section, as she helps PP2 children to get ready for their primary-level life. She works hard to strengthen their power in holding pencils, reading bigger words, and taking responsibility for their belongings. Sr. Phionah teaches in upper primary and junior secondary and manages the food store and the welfare of the non-teaching staff members. Both sisters help in guidance and counseling, catechism, and liturgy, and we really appreciate their commitment to sharing their knowledge with the young ones.

We are also involved in our church’s pastoral life, like taking care of the PMC, PPI, life skills, and CHOIR, and we often visit poor outstations for food distributions and home visits to the elderly and the sick around us. We recently have accomplished our project of building houses for the poorest members of society.

WE ARE AT THE HEART OF SERVING THE POOREST OF THE POOR.
