Blessed Mary of the Passion

A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.

Blessed Mary of the Passion, foundress of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary, lived a path enlightened by the face of God. From her earliest years to the end of her life, she let herself be led by the Spirit with courage, intuition, and wonder.

A Path In The Spirit

"A life is a path enlightened by a face. Many feel it and live it, but do not dare to think it."

Who Was She?

Our Founder — Mary of the Passion

Hélène de Chappotin, known in religion as Mary of the Passion, founded the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary in 1877. A woman of deep prayer and bold missionary zeal, she gave the Institute its enduring charism: the Ecce et Fiat of Mary — a complete and loving availability to the will of God for the salvation of the world.

Born in Nantes, France, Mary of the Passion showed deep natural gifts and faith from childhood. Through prayer, suffering, questioning, and conversion, she gradually discovered the hidden presence of God within her and learned to place her strong nature at the service of others, especially the poor.

How Did She Let Herself Be Led?

A life shaped by grace, surrender, and mission

Mary of the Passion sought the reason for everything around her and, in that search, discovered the hidden presence of God within. That discovery became a path from the Spirit in her own heart to the Spirit at work in the whole world.

The deaths of close family members marked her deeply, yet those painful experiences became part of her conversion. Her path moved through retreat, discernment, illness, religious life, and renewed mission, each step deepening her openness to God's will.

Her story is not simply one of personal holiness, but of availability. She let her life be formed by God's action, and from that surrender the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary received a missionary charism that continues across the world.

Her Enduring Charism

The spirit that still guides the region

Mary of the Passion founded the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary in 1877 as a community of women wholly available to God for the salvation of the world. Her legacy lives on wherever the sisters pray, accompany, teach, heal, and serve.

That charism is still expressed in the Ecce et Fiat of Mary: a complete and loving readiness for the Father's work, carried out through faith, humility, and joyful missionary openness.
